Module 1: Business Plan Boot Camp, FAU Business Plan Competition Rules and Presentation Basics

Overview:

  1. Learn the 20,000 foot view of what it is REALLY like to become an entrepreneur by putting your vision to the test.
  2. Business Plan 101. Learn the guidelines to compete in the annual FAU Business Plan Competition and how to register to compete for cash and prizes. Is your business plan ready for funding? The competition will expose your business plan to funding opportunities.
  3. Learn the difference of marketing versus sales. Learn how to explain your business, your products/services, and industry positioning. Create a strong marketing program that will help you reach the appropriate target audience and markets; learn to set the stage for strong customer relationships. 
  4. Learn the basics in building sound financials, cash flow, income statement, use of funds.
  5. Discover the most effective research tools available, including the proper use of databases in researching competition, demographics, and markets.
  6. Learn how to create a management team, understand the need for a strong management team, and how to attract and hire the right people.
  7. Use your plan to gain investor attention by showing compelling financial and market potential. Learn compelling information about the investor community and how they make decisions on investing in business plan ventures.
  8. Presenting your business plan to various audiences including financial institutions, angel investors and venture capital investors.
  9. Entrepreneurs will learn the importance basic presentation skill sets and a great elevator pitch.
  10. Participants will have the opportunity to pitch their concepts to serial entrepreneurs and investors.
  11. Learn leadership entrepreneur qualities and skills needed to identify the next steps of execution and implementation to create a "fundable" business plan. Fine tune your company, idea, or share another person’s dream. Teams will be made up of people from all backgrounds – various FAU colleges or the Florida business community.
  12. Interact with experts who will speak to issues establishing management control and government compliance, operations management for customer service, personnel planning, day to day management procedures and practices, evaluation of risks and contingencies, team building and creating quality in all aspects.
  13. Work in teams as entrepreneurs take a practical approach to putting a formal presentation for angel investors, financial institutions and the venture capital community together from teachings in Module 1 and throughout Module 2 along with professional experiences.
  14. Prepare teams to compete in the FAU Business Plan Competition or pitch to the investment community.

Module 2: Business Plan Mentoring

Overview: Ask yourself the following...

  1. Do you need individual customized assistance in developing your business plan to articulate your concept or venture? 
  2. Do you need a subject matter expert and have not had success or the time to locate one?
  3. Do you need a mentor or coach that can meet the demands of your personal or professional schedule to help provide solutions to unanswered questions?

Mentors provide guidance, direction, advisement and flexibility.

  • Mentors are FAU faculty, business plan certificate instructors, and entrepreneurs and investors affiliated with the Adams Center for Entrepreneurship.
  • Participants will receive 5 hours of personalized mentoring on campus at the FAU College of Business.
  • Participants will receive guidance and coaching that pertains to their specific business plan.
  • Participants will work with mentor(s) to determine appropriate scope.
  • Participants will work with mentor(s) to determine appropriate meeting times and dates.
  • Participants will work with mentor(s) to determine appropriate deliverables and expectations.
  • Participants and mentor(s) will work with administration to provide appropriate paperwork to administer program.
